Overheating is one of the main and most destructive symptoms associated with a blown head gasket and can be caused by a variety of issues relating to the head gasket.
If the head gasket is allowing oil to flow into the coolant channels the oil will prevent the coolant from doing its job as well as rob the engine of the oil it needs to lubricate its moving parts. The two factors ineffective cooling due to the oil and coolant mixing combined with the increased friction from the poorly lubricated parts can cause a vehicle to quickly overheat. If the gasket is allowing coolant to escape into the cylinders major engine damage can result, the main symptoms of this occurring is steam issuing from the tail pipe and large loss of coolant. This again will cause the engine to quickly overheat. While all of these problems can cause large amounts of damage to a vehicle, they can be repaired through the use of engine sealant. However action needs to be taken quickly, once the problem has been identified early for an adequate repair to take place.
